Public transit is going to be a fact of life in the near future. There simply isn't going to be the energy to keep the happy motoring society running the way it has.

Those who argue against rail simply don't understand energy. Oil production has remained stagnant for four years. The IEA is predicting a 9.1% decline next year. Mexico (who provides us with 13% of our oil) has said that they'll probably be unable to export any oil in four years thanks to the collapse of their supergiant oil field Cantarell.

The longer we wait to rebuild our rail system, the graver the crisis is going to be.

Richie,

Back when you posted this I remarked that I didn't think ANY future highways made sense, in light of the evidence that we had nearly reached peak oil. Of course, most people simply laughed at me and my "crazy" ideas back then, so now I wonder if you are still in favor of wasting more of our valuable resources to build a new highway when we ought to be re-building our mass transit and passenger rail systems.

The debate shouldn't be about protecting the wetlands, but rather about how we use our diminishing resources to help people still get around.

Hey there! I know you've been trying to call, I'm gonna call you this weekend, I promise! Glad to see the new car is running well, and of course, the special plates are on her! Take care, hope everything is going well- and as soon as I have this baby and we're settled in and in a routine, let's have lunch so I can introduce you to baby Keegan.

You don't think that the Dems will bring change, yet you vote for religious nuts whose party has been in power since 1994. The same party responsible for the endless, ill-begotten war that we're stuck in right now that even a moron could have foreseen to be a disaster (but, back in 2003 those of us who weren't morons were called "traitors").

My top two are:

Pro Business Republican 95%
Libertarian 85%

I've run into the same thing as you. Many of my friends are moderate to liberal and I really don't get along with conservatives even though I'm mostly conservative. Odd.
