All about Kansas license plates

2002 brought a bit of a departure with the new tags.

Sequence: The first sequence for the 2002 issue plate ranges from PBA to SLZ (the 1995 issue continues the sequence was used to cover overruns) and from TAA at least to the XQ range. No plates appear to have been issued that begin with "Y" or "Z" and combinations such as "SEX" or "WAR" were skipped. "SAM" was likely skipped to avoid confusion with the sample plates.

Renewal Decals: Automobile and light truck plates were issued for the 2002 expiration only. All heavy trucks and "short-term" new car registrations were issued 1995 tags until renewal time. Motorcycle tags use the same green on white colored decal as the ones for personalized and specialty tags. Heavy Trucks (over 12M) had their official" expiration month changed from December of 2003 to February 2005 to better reflect the actual renewal period for heavy trucks. (which is been between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15) With the exception of the 2002 decal for motorcycles, all renewal decals so far have been black numbers on a colored background.

The 2002 plates remain valid until 2010, although the next series of general issue plates are now in service.
