The 1972 tag introduced the "letter code" into the numbering scheme.  Although Wilson County probably didn't have any problems with the old system, Johnson county probably did.

With the 1973-1976 plates, the state outline became a little "fuzzy".  This is a yellow-on-green 1973 plate from Rice County.

A 1974 "Z" plate from Shawnee county.  The "Z" plates were used in case the regular tags for a month (in this case, the Febuary "A" series) are all used
