History

When the US 69 bypass around Pittsburg was designated in 1955, the old alignment through Pittsburg. was retained as an alternate route. The byapss was completed in 1957.

The State Highway Commission never submitted the bannered route to AASHTO. After the Commission's responsibilies were transferred to KDOT, the new agency submitted all of the unnaproved bannered routes for approval. At AASHTO's October 13, 1979 meeting, they approved the designation, but requested that the designation be changed from an Alternate route to a buisness route.
