Tropical trivia, 2009 style

With the Atlantic finally firing up tropical cyclones, I figured to add a little bit of miscellany to it:

* This year begins the sixth go-around for the current Atlantic tropical cyclone names.

* The fewest number of named storms in a season using this list is 7 (in 1991 and 1997, although there was an 8th name-eligible storm in ’91). From those first 7 names, two (“Ana” and “Claudette”) are being used for the sixth time this year.

* The most named storms in a season with this list was 16, back in 2003.

* Three storm names – Fabian, Isabel, and Juan – were “retired” from the 2003 list, thus, 3 new names on this year’s list – Fred, Ida, and Joaquin. Incidentally, The original “F” storm on this list was Frederic – which was retired after the 1979 season. Go figure
