Welcome to route56.com

Welcome to my anchor point on the web. For over 20 years, I have shared various subjects regarding highway, railways, local radio, and more.

I chose the name “route56” in honor of the green and white variant of the US Highway shield that the Kansas Department of Transportation and its predecessor agency used specifically to mark US 56 from the designation of US 56 in 1956 until KDOT elected to adopt the standard black-and-white design in the mid-1980s

OK, in scanning my negatives, Started in June, went through to August, then switched and started from the top in January.  I guess that means I resume in September, right?

  • Foot Status

My foot hurts, even after taking my prescribed pain medication.  Surgery was successful, albeit much more extensive than anticipated. My left foot’s big toe was shattered.  I also saw the out-of-pocket estimate. Oh boy. If I read my policy correctly, I’ve pretty much reached the out-of-pocket max for 2016 – and I still have 11…

    First Sunday of 2016

[All this happened before I broke my foot] The first Sunday of the month usually means cleaning the BNSF station in Lawrence. But first, I needed to get outside and catch some trains. Because of my ‘appointment,’ I elected to stay close to town and went with the UP Kansas Sub.

  • Not so graceful on the ice

The first week of 2016 has not exactly gone as planned. Wednesday morning at a quarter after midnight, I attempted to walk down the driveway. Problem was, the snow has gotten so compacted it did turn to ice. After about two steps, I twisted my left foot, landed on my ass, and sent my phone…

Back to when it all began…

I’ve been doing this picture-taking thing for 20 years now. To close out this 20th year, I pulled out my old negative folder and scanned several negatives from that first year.

    A shiny metal suit…

For years, Microsoft has been compared to the Borg from Star Trek. However, with all the bruhaha regarding how they are coercing Windows 7 and 8 users to upgrade to Windows 10, I feel that a comparison to the Cybermen from Doctor Who was more apt.

    Recent Railfan Photography

Okay, it’s been a while, but I have taken a few trips railfanning lately.

  • Making a move

This week, I have been doing a little digital shuffling. Recently, a friend of the family (namely, the brother of our next door neighbor) solicited his services for our family business’s website (Kennedy Glass) which I had previously placed on the account for this personal website. Until recently, I did not realize that this friend…

  • Time Fall

For those of you that haven’t noticed this little quirk about me, I dabble in writing the occasional fan-fiction story.
