The route was withdrawn in a December 5, 2000 KDOT resolution (along with K-134) and turned back to Labette County in consideration for constructing US 400 bypass of Parsons. The turnback was effective upon the opening of the Parsons bypass in 2001.

The first K-222 was established via a June 8, 1960 Highway Commission resolution in conjunction with the designation of the US 69 bypass around Arma and the withdrawal of the old alignment through Arma. The number was assigned in sequence. The route connected the new US 69 alignment to South Street in Arma. The Bypass was completed in 1961.
In a September 13, 1961 Highway Commission resolution, the commission restored the old US 69 alignment. As a consequence, the spur was considered redundant, and was withdrawn in a February 14, 1962 Highway Commission resolution.

K-227 was established in a September 11, 1968 Highway Commission resolution in conjunction with a planned relocation of US 73 to enter Atchison on Woodlawn Avenue. The number was assigned in sequence. The connection between US 59 and Woodlawn was constructed in 1969, but the proposed new US 73 was never built.
In a April 6, 1981 KDOT resolution, a new alignment of US 73 was designated, replacing both the old alignment and the unbuilt proposal. When the new US 73 alignment was completed in 1984, K-227 was re-designated as part of US 73.

History
The Flood of 1951 resulted in the main Missouri River channel being shifted to the east, separating St. Joseph’s Rosecrans Airport from the rest of the city. A new Access road was constructed from the US 36 at Elwood and was designated K-238 in a July 12, 1961 Highway Commission resolution.
In 1980, a new US 36 alignment was constructed, bypassing Elwood. K-238 was routed east on the former US 36. In 1993, a new direct connection was made with US 36 south of Elwood, allowing the former US 36 in Elwood to be turned back.
